The dream city of first Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The former British province of Punjab was split between East Punjab in India West Punjab in Pakistan, after the partition of India in 1947. Chandigarh, in 1949 was designed by an American planner and architect, Albert Mayer since Indian Punjab required a new capital city to replace Lahore, which had become part of Pakistan. The temporary capital of East Punjab was Shimla until Chandigarh was completed in 1960.

Geography

Chandigarh is situated in northwest India near the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas, covering an area of approximately 114 km. Chandigarh borders the states of Haryana and Punjab. 30.74°N 76.79°E is the exact geographic co-ordinates of Chandigarh with an average elevation of 321 meters (1053 ft).

Chandigarh includes a vast area of flat, fertile land since it is situated in the northern plain. Mohali, Patiala, Zirakpur and Roopnagar are the surrounding cities in Punjab, Panchkula and Ambala in Haryana.
